Free Country Designs, located in Sterling, Virginia, provides slab flattening services, which are used to create furniture out of live edge slab. Live edge wood slabs do not have finished edges, and the natural curve of the tree trunk gives the slab an organic look. This has made it one of the hottest trends in interior design.
Equipment
Our expert team uses the Wood-Mizer MB200 slab flattener to accurately and easily flatten odd-shaped and oversized slabs. This machine flattens and sands raw live edge slabs to get them ready for use. It uses a five-inch cutter head that can be used as a sanding attachment as well if you want an even more polished finish on your slab.
The Wood-Mizer MB200 slab flattening machine can flatten lumber from the kiln with dimensions of up to 13-feet long and 54-inches wide. This complements our LX250 bandsaw perfectly. If you purchase a raw wood live edge slab and would like it flattened, we can do that much quicker with the Wood-Mizer slab flattener than with our CNC router.
Using Live Edge Slabs
Many live edge slabs are cut from logs that otherwise would have been left to waste, and in this way are a sustainable product. They can be used to make countertops, dining room tables, and mantles. You will find them in restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and offices as coffee tables, bar countertops, and desks.
Each piece is unique, and you can see the crazy grain patterns in crotches and burls. Each piece blends aesthetics and functionality and is a focal point in the room.
Our Slab Flattening Service
Slabs present some challenges, including the following:
- Holes that may need to be filled with resin or epoxy inlays
- Cracks, voids, and bark inclusions
- Inconsistent end grain cuts
- Curling and twisting wood
- Epoxy that results in a bad chemical reaction
For example, you may want to use a live edge slab for a natural wood countertop. If so, you will need to have a solid piece without holes or voids.
When you hire Free Country Designs, we’ll use the Wood-Mizer MB200 slab flattening machine to produce your slab faster and easier than you thought possible.
